FORMES SUBTILES

From a selection of rare photographic documents by Gaston Karquel that document the exhibition Formes Utiles at the initiative of the Union des Artistes Modernes (L’UAM) in 1949, the curators Géraldine Postel & David Magnin play with the words and things of art and creation, their temporal connections, the evolution and convolutions of the aesthetic fields from modernism to contemporaneity.

This selection of photographs that reports on the first still lifes in the history of design photography, gives the theme to the invitation of 15 artists who reinterpret or remix these iconic objects. The photographs are presented face to face with the works of each artist, in the manner of a conversation or an unprecedented face to face.

Formes Subtiles – (Modern Remix) is a playful exercise, where the curatorial duo brings together works produced for the occasion, some pieces of period furniture and this background of photographs, enrich the subject to create a set of living images and new experiences. These photographs by Gaston Karquel come from the collection of David Magnin.
